New Ripken Book Aims to Make Game Better for Young Players

Champaign, IL (PRWeb) January 11, 2007 -- Two members of baseball's most famous family are trying to make the sport that has brought them so much joy better for youth players everywhere. Baseball icon Cal Ripken, Jr., and his brother, 12-year major league veteran Bill Ripken, have teamed up on a book that provides youth baseball coaches with the resources they need to manage a team effectively and put the fun back in the game.

In Coaching Youth Baseball the Ripken Way (Human Kinetics, 2007), the Ripken brothers and colleague Scott Lowe provide youth baseball coaches with the blueprint to make the game exciting, safe, educational, enjoyable and rewarding for young players. The Ripkens have been holding camps and clinics for youth players across the country since 1999, the same year in which the largest division of the Babe Ruth League (ages 5 to 12) was renamed Cal Ripken Baseball. The Cal Ripken Division of the Babe Ruth League remains the only national youth baseball organization to have seen its participation numbers grow in that time period. Still, the Ripkens know that the best way for them to spread their message and impact as many youth players as possible is through their coaches.

"Managers and coaches are the ones who spend the most time interacting with young players and the ones who can make a child's experience in youth sports fun and memorable," says Cal Ripken, Jr. "Therefore, it is very important for us to arm youth coaches with the information and support that they need to ensure the best possible experience for the players who represent the game's future.

Coaching education is a key initiative for the Ripkens. Last fall, they announced the requirement that all coaches affiliated with Babe Ruth League Inc. obtain certification by July 31, 2008. To accomplish this, Ripken Baseball Inc. and the Babe Ruth League have launched an online coaching certification program in conjunction with the American Sport Education Program. The authors believe that overall youth baseball participation will increase if more coaches adhere to the principles addressed in the book and course. "Volunteer coaches are the lifeblood of our sport," says Cal Ripken, Jr. "If a young player's first experience with the game of baseball is a positive one, the chances are much higher that he or she will fall in love with the game and stick with it."

Coaching Youth Baseball the Ripken Way provides youth and high school coaches with a look into the Ripken Way of instruction, a philosophy inspired by the lessons they learned from their dad, Cal Ripken, Sr., and the brothers' combined 33 years of big league playing experience. The book covers the responsibilities of a coach, general and age-specific goal setting, the realities of coaching and practice planning. It also includes detailed age-specific practice plans and more than 50 drills that can be incorporated into those practices.
