Akonix Systems, Inc. announced last week that the predominant IM concerns for companies in 2007 will include risk management, compliance, and e-discovery. During 2006, the Akonix IM Security Center identified 15 percent more threats than in 2005 for a total of 406 attacks on IM networks. New spyware, worms, viruses and other malicious attacks are expected to maintain the same 92 percent annual growth rate of 2006. Additionally, one-third of Akonix survey respondents report they have been threatened or harassed via IM at work.

The American Management Association (AMA) and the ePolicy Institute report that 35 percent of employees use IM at work and 50 percent of workplace users download free IM tools over the Internet. Only 31 percent of organizations have IM policies, and a mere 13 percent retain IM business records. The December 1, 2006 changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure regarding e-discovery rules require that IM conversations be stored and retrievable in the event of a legal action.

"We are predicting that 2007 will be the year in which multiple forces collide to create an undeniable pressure on companies to take action to avoid the risks and liabilities they face due to their employees' use of IM in the workplace," said Peter Shaw, CEO of Akonix. "The combination of the changes to Federal Rules of Civil Procedure plus existing records retention regulations, liability for inappropriate use by employees and risk of network outages from hacker attacks creates a 'perfect storm' that poses multi-million dollar risks to all organizations."

The demand for information technology jobs is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations through 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
