News From USW: Steelworkers, Western Pennsylvania Union Members to Dedicate Philip Murray Bridge following Pittsburgh Labor Day Parade
PITTSBURGH (BusinessWire EON) August 30, 2007 -- Philip Murray (1886-1952) was the first president of the Steelworkers Union, longtime president of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) labor federation and a Western Pennsylvania coal miner who became a top leader of the United Mine Workers of America through the tumultuous years of the early 20th Century.
Allegheny County Council unanimously passed a resolution presented by Councilman and United Steelworkers leader John DeFazio on May 1st renaming the former 10th Street Bridge to the Philip Murray Bridge in honor of this important Scottish immigrant labor leader who made Pittsburgh his home.
The Pittsburgh Labor Day Parade, traditionally one of the nation's largest, begins at the Mellon Arena at 10 a.m., preceded by a rally for Sen. John Edwards at 9:00 a.m. outside of the Box Office at Gate One at the Mellon Arena. The parade proceeds through downtown streets, ending at a reviewing stand on the Boulevard of the Allies, beside the USW International headquarters.
Chartered buses will be available beside the USW headquarters building to transport parade goers to and from the dedication ceremony on the bridge, which will be closed to traffic from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Food, refreshments and mementos will be available near the speakers stand on the South Side end of the bridge.
The speakers list at the dedication ceremony, where special metal plaques for the bridge will be unveiled, includes USW President Leo Gerard, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato, USW Vice President Fred Redmond, AFL-CIO Allegheny County Labor Council President Jack Shea, Congressman Jason Altmire and other labor and community leaders. Relatives of Murray have also been invited. DeFazio will MC the event.
"Philip Murray initiated the United Steelworkers tradition of setting the pace for industrial wages and benefits for working people," said USW President Gerard. "Murray's leadership of the CIO brought about unprecedented improvements in the economic and social position of immigrant workers, African-American workers and many others. As the working people face the challenges of today, it's worthwhile studying and honoring people like Philip Murray, who in his own humble way made a big difference in the quality of Americans' lives during his time."
