Synopsis:

Founders v. Bush is a comparison in quotations of the policies and politics of the Founding Fathers and the administration of George W. Bush. See what the Founders really thought about the Constitution, Liberty, Patriotism, Religion, War, Truth, Lies, Wealth, and more...in their own words. 621 sourced quotes.

Author's statement:

Founders v. Bush is a comparison in quotations of the policies and politics of the Founding Fathers and those of George W. Bush; a sourced compilation in their own words on issues of War & Peace, Religion & Liberty, Taxes & Debt, Honesty & Responsibility ---a tragicomic juxtaposition of mind-numbing NewSpeak and timeless eloquence.

This book contrasts the statements of George W. Bush and his advisers with relevant words from Franklin, Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison and Hamilton. While it is not a book of Bush gaffes and malapropisms, it is hardly possible to compare Bush's simplistic pre-chewed garble to the elegance, wit and erudition of our defining spokesmen without wincing in dismay. However, the purpose here is not to portray Bush as a clown prince. "Bushisms" tend to deflect us from the issues and, in fact, many of the dopey statements and malapropisms most often attributed to Bush are fakes or were actually said by Dan Quayle or were spoutings of some late-night comedian or splenetic Anon.

As to George W. Bush, I don't purport to know anything about him beyond his public image and pronouncements. I don't know if he truly eschews open-minded discussion, ignores undesirable evidence and reasoning or if he is a master actor who has created a convincing persona of the "artificial aristocrat" that Jefferson warned us of; I don't know if he is ignorant and uncurious or merely master poseur---but that he is a smug demagogue and prodigious liar is beyond all doubt. ~ Steve Coffman, Founders v. Bush

About the author:

Steve Coffman grew up in South Bend, Indiana where he wrote his senior class play. At the University of Michigan he won three Avery Hopwood creative writing awards and has since had several plays produced, including productions at University of Detroit, Norfolk State College, Bowie State College, The Smithsonian Institution, and by the Dundee Players.

Since 1972, Steve and his wife Bobbie have lived on a defunct farm at the end of a dirt road on one of the highest hills in rural Yates County, where they have raised two children, bounteous flowers and vegetables, occasional cows, horses, pigs, chickens and many acres of glorious trees.

His move to a rural lifestyle gradually caused Coffman's writing to move toward fiction and creative nonfiction. He has had stories published in "The Little Magazine" and "Nantucket Review" and four in "Redbook" (including "Freshening" which was also anthologized in Redbook's Famous Fiction, Vol. II.)

Apart from Founders v. Bush (One World Studios, 2007) his published nonfiction includes two political memoirs, Peace Meal and Messy Freedom (Foothills Publishing, 2005 and 2006), and the country memoir How To Walk A Pig (Lyons & Burford, 1995 - out of print) which was expanded and re-released as Chicken Justice (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A//www.amazon.com/Chicken-Justice-Unexpected-Lessons-Country/dp/1588162184?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181952932&sr=1-1&tag=choppertowthe-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325) (Hearst, 2006.)

Coffman has taught writing at the University of Iowa, University of Michigan, and for Keuka College in the Elmira Correctional Facility, where he taught and counseled for seven years. For ten years subsequently he ran a mediation program in Yates County Family Court and still works for the program as a volunteer mediator. For twenty years he was also a board member for the Keuka Housing Council, which provides and improves housing for low and low-low income people. He is currently active in the Finger Lakes Progressives and Yates County Progressives. His varied writings still run the gamut from country memoir to travel memoir, from fiction to political writing.

He has given readings from Madison CT to Seattle WA, including dozens within New York State. He has led NYS writing workshops in Dundee, Penn Yan, Indian Lake, Finger Lakes Community College, Canastota, Tupper Lake, North Creek and Attica Correctional Facility.

About the publisher:

One World Studios Ltd. is an independent media company based in Los Angeles.

Founders v. Bush is their first title as book publisher, but One World is no stranger to the independent media arena. Having rolled their self financed, produced, and distributed feature film, the award-winning biker documentary (http://www.choppertown.net) Choppertown: the Sinners (2005) into a successful counter-culture media franchise, principals Zack Coffman and Scott DiLalla set their sights on publishing by acquiring the rights to Zack's father Steve Coffman's out-of-print memoir How to Walk a Pig and repackaging it for re-release as Chicken Justice by Hearst in 2006. Encouraged by the success of Chicken Justice, One World worked closely with Coffman on the preparation and release of Founders v. Bush. They are currently in the editing stages of their third film, the vintage British motorcycle documentary (http://www.brittown.com) Brittown and working with Steve Coffman on his upcoming book projects.
