Acclaimed Policy Leader Launches New Book on Faith
Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) November 18, 2007 -- While some recent books have blamed religion for society's woes, in Hope Matters: The Untold Story of How Faith Works in America, John A. Calhoun shows that faith can bring out the goodness of people--especially when they heed its call to help others.
On November 6, Calhoun released Hope Matters at the National Press Club, posing the question: Why does hope matter? Three people featured in the book took that challenge: Anthony Ortiz, the CEO of California Youth Outreach (Fresno, Calif.); Robin Bernstein, the President and CEO of The Educational Alliance (New York City); and Alexie Torres-Fleming, the founding Executive Director of Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice (YMPJ) in the Bronx.
As an illiterate seventh grade dropout, Ortiz's life belonged to his gang. One Christmas Eve during his early teens, he found himself in a lonely jail cell. "You know you've hit rock bottom," he said, "when your only friend is a cockroach." Once he realized God had a plan for him, his life changed. Sometimes people don't have any idea what that purpose is, he explained, but it's something at the core of their being. Working with some of the toughest kids in his state, Ortiz knows his purpose is to help others find theirs.
"If God can work with this lump of clay," Ortiz chuckled, "he can work with anyone."
For Robin Bernstein, the death of her father when she was a child has inspired her to help others. Choking back tears, she explained how, after his death she learned the Hebrew concept of tikkum olam, or "repairing the world." "My father's strength and teachings influence everything I do," she says. "For every person The Educational Alliance helps...his memory is honored."
For Alexie Torres-Fleming hope matters because it matters to her community. As the daughter of a custodian who grew up in the housing projects of the South Bronx, she "escaped" to Madison Avenue's fast track. Finding herself unfulfilled, she moved back to her old neighborhood to combat crime and violence. "Friends warned me that I was moving down," she says simply. "But I was moving up. True power is when you find your blessing, your calling."
After a church in Torres-Fleming's neighborhood was burned by DRUG dealers, the community rallied together in prayer, hoping that God would show them how to make their neighborhood better. Torres-Fleming was awed by their determination. The YMPJ does its part by rebuilding local neighborhoods and preparing young people for lives of peace and justice.
John Calhoun has held many distinct public-policy positions. He was appointed the U.S. Commissioner of the Administration For Children, Youth and Families by President Jimmy Carter and served as the founding president of the National Crime Prevention Council for twenty years. A few years ago, he was so caught up in bureaucracy, that he forgot why his work mattered. It was then that he embarked on a two-year cross-country journey to discover how faith motivates some of America's hardest-working public servants. He spoke with Christians of every denomination, Muslims, Jews, and others--some who pray five times a day and some who are "not that religious."
He wants Hope Matters to "inspire people to ask, 'How can I be there for my neighbor?' Is there a more important question as we go through life together?"
