Firefighter Recruitment Information and Advice
This article is designed to assist anybody who wishes to obtain more Information on Firefighter Recruitment and the Selection Process. Everything will be explained in detail and insider tips and advice will be given, on everything from the iniatial Application form to being offered a Contract Of Employment from the Fire Service.THE APPLICATION FORM. This is the probably the most important part of the whole Recruitment Process. It is designed to screen people out, rather than get people in. Over 90% of applicants, fail the application alone, so make sure that you read everything, including the Guidance Notes that come with your application. This is the first time that the Brigade is going to find anything out about you, so ensure that you fill out every part of the form correctly. Follow all of the instructions that you are given and you should be okay. This is the only chance that you will have of making it to the next stage of the recruitment process. So make sure that you give it your undivided attention, and take your time when filling it in. Here are some tips to make it easier for you.Make copies of your application form to practice on. Keep the original for your final draft. Know your answers on meeting the Brigades needs. This will help your application to stand out from all the others.Read through your application form carefully, and ensure that you understand all of the instructions and questions, before you start. Think very carefully about how you can show what skills and abilities you have, via the questions that you are being asked. Try to include information that you have already found out about your local Brigade.Punctuation and grammar should be excellent. Only use capital letters when you are supposed to, and place commas and full stops in the correct place. Your form needs to stand out from the others.Never leave a blank space. Your Brigade will be looking for any way they can to screen you out of the thousands of other applicants. They will fail you for the most trivial of things, such as forgetting to include your post code. Once you have finished your final draft copy, ask friends or relatives to look through it and give you their opinion. Only when you are 100% happy with your draft, should you fill out the official application form. With the introduction of the National Firefighter Tests, candidates are now required to provide examples, of where they feel that they meet the essential requirements of the role, as outlined in the trainee firefighter Personal Qualities and Attributes (PQA's). Any candidates that meet the requirements, will be successful and invited back to take part in the next stage of the recruitment procedure. Make sure that you hand your official application in, before any pre-stated deadline. Allow for any delays, such as postal strikes etc. Also DO NOT LIE! If you lie on your application form, and the Brigade finds out, you will be dismissed regardless. Even in the future, if anybody finds out that you have lied on your application form, you will be dismissed regardless. If you fail the application process, you are required to wait 3 months, until you can resubmit another one. Your application will start from scratch (a clean slate).
CRIMINAL RECORDS I am getting hundreds of emails from people wanting to join the Fire Service, who are worried that their past may come back to haunt them. Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, criminal convictions can become spent or ignored after a rehabilitation period. They will however probably remain on the Police National computer. The rehabilitation period varies, depending on the sentence or order imposed by the courts. Custodial sentences of more than two and a half years can NEVER become spent.
The following sentences become spent after fixed periods from the date of conviction. Rehabilitation Period per Sentence Prison for more than two and a half years......Never Prison for more than 6 months, but less than two and a half years.....10 years Prison for 6 months or less......7 years Fine......5 years Dismissal with disgrace from Her Majesty's Service......10 years Dismissal from Her Majesty's Service......7 years Detention in respect of conviction in Service Disciplinary Proceedings......5 years Borstal......7 years Detention for over 6 months, but less than two and a half years......5 years Detention for 6 months or less......3 years Probation......5 years Hospital Order under Mental Health Act 1983......5 years or 2 years after order ceases to have effect, which ever is the longer Absolute Discharge......6 months Conditional Discharge, Probation Order, Binding Over, Care Order, Supervision Order......One year after conviction of the order, or one year after the order ends, which ever is the longer Disqualification......The Period of Disqualification NB. These periods will be reduced by half, if the offender was under the age of 18 at the date of conviction.
The following sentences can NEVER become spent A period of imprisonment, youth custody detention in a young offenders institution, or corrective training, for a term of more than two and a half years. A sentence of imprisonment for life A sentence of Preventive DetentionDetention during Her Majesty's Pleasure or for life. For a more in depth knowledge, please refer to The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974
THE DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION ACT The Fire Service Must not directly discriminate against a disabled job applicant or employee because of their disability. Direct discrimination cannot be justified in any way. Must make reasonable adjustments for job applicants or employees. Failure to make adjustments cannot be justified. Must not subject a disabled job applicant, or an employee to disability related discrimination. Must not subject disabled employees to harassment or victimisation because of their disability. Must develop an inclusive culture, in which disabled firefighters are fairly treated. Should never make decisions about a persons capability based purely on medical evidence. Disabled firefighters must be treated as individuals, and reasonable adjustments must be made. Ensure managers must work with Occupational Health and Medical Advisers, to reach decisions about making adjustments, redeploying or dismissing a disabled employee. Must ensure that all staff have a basic understanding of the basic requirements of the DDA Must ensure that managers make decisions WITH disabled employees, not ABOUT them Must adopt a "Can do" creative approach to managing disability.
EYESIGHT REQUIREMENTS The eyesight requirements clearly set out by the Fire Service, currently require that upon application, firefighters should have excellent eye sight in both eyes, without the need for glasses or contact lenses. Some Brigades however, do make allowances for anyone who has undergone corrective eye surgery. It is usually a requirement to wait at least 2 years after the corrective eye surgery, before applying. Please contact your relevant Brigade for more details. The best way of finding out what standard your eyes are, is to have them tested. Unfortunately, you will have to pay for this yourself, but it could prevent much heart ache in the long run. NB Eyesight requirements are already changing within some Brigades. with some adopting a locally revised eyesight standard. If you are unsure about any of the eyesight requirements for entry to the UK Fire Service, please contact your local Brigade for more information.
THE SELECTION DAY When you are invited to attend the Selection Day, make sure that you arrive with plenty time to spare. If you are asked to attend at 0900, and you arrive at 0901, you will not be able to attend. This would mean failing before you even had a chance to enter the Fire Service Training Centre. Remember to wear your best suit. Appearance is very important. Take along your gym equipment in a sports bag, to get changed into. Wearing jewellery or the way you have your hair can play a big factor too. Check with the Brigade you are applying to join before hand, to make sure that you adhere to any policies in respect of these matters. Prepare yourself to be pushed to the limits physically. The tests are designed to be hard work and you will get very tired and sweaty. Also expect to hear lots of shouting. This is to give you the encouragement you need in order to get through it. Remember, if you are spoken to by one of the Recruitment Team, you must always address them as Sir or Ma'am. Listen very carefully to any instructions that you are given. You will only usually be told once by the instructors. This is to see if you have the ability to retain information, and don't have to be told things more than once. If you are asked if you would like to do the test again, or carry out a task again. Make sure that you say "Yes Sir/Ma'am". Failure to say yes will result in you going home early i'm afraid.
THE INTERVIEW This stage is usually down to the individual to pass. Again make sure that you are smartly presented, so that the interview panel can see that you have made the effort. Think before you answer any question. You will need to show that you don't just blurt out the first answer, and that you think about things before you answer them. Answer all questions truthfully and remember, they are not trying to catch you out.If you are asked about your hobbies for example. Don't just say one thing eg. reading. If you enjoy reading, then by all means tell them, but make sure that you tell them about other things that you like as well. You are going to be working on a watch that could have up to 15-20 people, and fitting in is what they are looking at. You will more than likely be asked questions about your local Fire Station, so make sure that you visit that station in order to find out as much as you can beforehand. It is advisable to visit several stations, not just the one.
THE MEDICAL STAGE The same dress code will apply for your medical, as it has with all other stages. Most tests will be a Fire Service Head Quarters, however some are carried out at local hospitals. You will be tested and assessed on the following things: Lung Capacity Step Test Height and Weight Strength Tests Eye Test Urine Test Blood Tests Visit to the On Site Doctor Make sure that you don't lie about anything, as you will be found out. They will have access to all of your Doctors records. When i had my medical, i was asked how my right ankle was? I actually broke it when i was 7 years old, and had forgotten all about it. It is after this final test, that if you are successful, you will be offered a Contract of Employment by the Brigade.
