Book Provides Useful Tools and Proven Methods to Successfully Deal with Trauma
Ann Arbor, MI (PRWEB) December 3, 2007 --Workplace emergencies can range from robberies to natural disasters, but no matter what the emergency is, those affected by it often need a little help before getting back to business. Based on his decades of emergency management experience, Jim Burtles has developed an efficient method of counseling such individuals, which he shares in his new book, "Coping with Crisis: A Counselor's Guide to the Restabilization Process" (ISBN 9781932690415, Loving Healing Press, 2007).
When unexpected and upsetting events occur in the workplace, it's easy for employees to become stressed, uneasy and unfocused. Burtles' four-step restabilization method can be delivered in as little as two days and has delivered successful results after a variety of crisis situations. In Burtles' counseling method, individuals are asked to describe the event from their perspectives, analyze their reactions, look at alternative solutions and practice better responses in scenarios depicting possible future events.
"Through practicing in a safe, risk-free environment, they are able to develop the confidence to face the future and what it may hold," Burtles says. "They will feel they are able to regain control of themselves and their emotions under stressful conditions."
"Coping with Crisis" provides counseling techniques, guidelines and training drills for emergency management counselors. The book details the distinct communication style necessary for such succinct, "lightweight" counseling. Unlike other more arduous and involved forms of counseling, Burtles' method calls for emotional detachment on the counselor's part in order to be effective, and "Coping with Crisis" contains examples and instruction to maintain the appropriate distance.
The restabilization method is aimed at restoring an individual's confidence and their ability to deal with life's problems. By using the tools in "Coping with Crisis," counselors can help their clients cope not only with the recent situation, but also help them to develop an appropriate response plan for significant life events in the future.
About the Author Jim Burtles resides in London, England. As director of Total Continuity Management, he works with senior executives of international corporations and government departments to help them develop complete emergency response plans and processes. He also worked for several years as a principle consultant with Safetynet PLC, teaching business executives how to plan for everything from minor emergencies to absolute catastrophes.
