New Book Takes Humorous Approach to Dealing with Difficult Co-Workers
Indianapolis, IN (PRWEB) June 24, 2008 -- Ask a person to reflect on their interactions with colleagues and often he or she instantly thinks of the one person who grates on their nerves. Even professionals who love their job and get along well co-workers can't help but encounter a few colleagues who are frustrating, emotionally-draining or worse.
According to a survey developed by the staffing service OfficeTeam in 2007 of more than 500 employees, 29 percent of respondents said they work with someone who is rude or unprofessional on the job. Of those, more than 68 percent felt that their co-workers frequently behaved poorly on the job. The survey also revealed that 59 percent of surveyed employees felt their co-workers upset not only their peers, but superiors as well.
To help disgruntled employees deal with difficult colleagues--and avoid becoming one--Robert Orndorff and Dulin Clark have crafted the humorous how-to guide, The PITA Principle: How to Work with and Avoid Becoming a Pain in the Ass. This recently-released book uses the PITA acronym, which stands for "Pain in the Ass," to describe the many types of problematic people one may encounter in the workplace.
"The PITA expression speaks to the real but unfortunate truth: that days, weeks, months and years of frustrating interactions with some co-workers put them in a category that's easy to quantify, understand and communicate to others who understand our plight. These people who arouse our emotions, challenge our patience, and make us labor for money on a daily basis are simply known as PITAs," say Orndorff and Clark.
In their book, Orndorff and Clark divide PITAs into a variety of categories to better explain their motivations and behavior in the workplace. For example, they use the nickname "Soggy PITA" to describe co-workers who have earned a reputation for being needy whiners. The premise of their book, however, is not to poke fun at difficult co-workers, but to help individuals deal with them more effectively on the job.
"We believe that by understanding a difficult person or a specific interaction with him or her, you increase your likelihood of having a more desirable outcome. Often by understanding the source of a problem or by understanding some of the needs, objectives or personality of the PITA, you can tailor your response based on strategy, rather than reacting emotionally," say Orndorff and Clark.
"Even co-workers who are a huge pain do have some redeeming qualities. It's up to you to identify those positives and use them to best advantage. It's important to appreciate that everyone is different and that different isn't always so bad," they add.
Another key concept in coping with problematic co-workers is to avoid becoming one. Too often, employees focus all of their attention on the faults of their colleagues and fail to assess or improve their own behavior. To avoid becoming the employee who alienates co-workers and supervisors, Orndorff and Clark encourage individuals to become a different kind of PITA. Their second and more favorable version of the PITA acronym stands for "Professionals Increasing Their Awareness." These types of employees understand that the only way to avoid being labeled a difficult co-worker is to become more self-aware, less defensive and willing to change, according to Orndorff and Clark.
"Whether we're talking about our own behaviors or the behaviors of our colleagues, it's essential to develop the capacity to see ourselves and others honestly and to be courageous enough to acknowledge our own weaknesses and struggles," they say.
